Our spring talks commence on Saturday the 14th February. The other three talks in the series will take place on the following dates:
March 14 – Jim Ryan
Aprils 11 – David Clarke
May 9 – Michael McDermot
Martin Dwan, the producer and director of the The Peoples’ Tenor, the critically acclaimed documentary on the life of John McCormack, will deliver the talk on the 14th February.
The Golden Voice and his World places John McCormack in the wider context of some of the great singers of the twentieth century, artists who shaped taste, technique, and recording itself.
Through a sequence of recordings, we hear McCormack not in isolation, nor as part of a national tradition, but in dialogue with some of the most celebrated tenors of his time and later. The emphasis throughout is on contrast: between styles, repertoires, recording technologies, and above all, artistic priorities.
The programme looks outward, tracing how McCormack’s unique blend of technique, diction, and emotional directness stands alongside, and apart from, his great contemporaries.
All of our talks take place in our traditional venue, Buswells Hotel, and will commence at 11am. Arrive early for tea/coffee and chat with fellow Society members. Anyone interested in joining the Society is welcome too.
